Updates At St. Croix Casino, Turtle Lake, Hotel

If you like Turtle Lake Casino, St. Croix, and you stay at the hotel there; you know what the rooms were like. While they were not the worst, they really weren’t the best. For those who haven’t visited recently, requests have been heard and the hotel is going through some changes.

While changes can be a bit frustrating while in progress, the outcome will be completely worth the hassle for future visits. I recently stayed during Valentine’s week and we stayed in the Egypt suite. The whirlpool tub was brand new, as were the counters and sinks. The look is much nicer, though the sinks do seem to spray water all over the place; it didn’t seem to matter how lightly I turned the water on.

The hotel room was not finished. Several of the installations have been a work in progress and should be near completion by this point. All I know is that I cannot wait to go back and see the final product. I shall send further updates and show you the outcome of the next suite we stay in, which will most likely be in April.

While I cannot vouch for the completed room feel, I can vouch for the front desk area. The room is much more appealing with a fireplace and area for sitting. The feel is much cleaner and I feel at peace while going through the check-in process.

A New Adventure

To my followers who haven’t heard much from me in the passing months. Life has been very busy. I have hit some road bumps, and I have also begun a new journey. This past September I found out that my book, Runway Dreams: A Black & White Affair, will be published by, Black Rose Writing, on March 29th of this year.

I am beyond elated about this development and it has provided me with a lot more work outside of my regular job, which is working for an art gallery. I am currently in the middle of putting a marketing plan into effect for my novel, as well as planning a release party. All of these things take time, money, and lots of thought.

While I very much enjoy my blog, it has been hard between the book and some other things in life, to keep up a consistent writing system. I do want to continue with Star Spirit Adventures, but I am currently in the process of deciding whether or not to redefine it.

If I do remake the site, it will be a focus more on experiences, which to me still has to do with adventure. You will still receive critiques and information on my travels, but you will also see other articles that may be journal like in structure. I will keep things tasteful, but I am a reflective person, so you will learn about what I learn. This is just a possibility at this point. I will keep readers updated on my decision, once I figure out the logistics.

Until later, keep on exploring and having adventures. I know I will. Every day brings new possibilities.

An Evening Of Fun With The Squirrel Nut Zippers

I have always been a lover of live music, so I seldom pass up a chance to see a band in person, even if it’s one I haven’t listened to before. My love of music covers many genres, and for the most part, I can thank my father for the variety I have introduced into my life. Being around a band that plays so many types of music has its benefits.

Recently, on a Saturday night, a friend of mine invited me to see the, Squirrel Nut Zippers, at the State Theater, in Eau Claire. I had heard of them, but didn’t know offhandedly, what they played. I decided that it would be nice to see friends and spend a night out, so I agreed to go. Man, am I glad I went.

The Squirrel Nut Zippers have a big band sound. The band consists of nine people. Their female lead is from New Orleans, so they have that New Orleans flair. The music was lively, upbeat, and it had my foot tapping from note one. My favorite thing about the evening was that this band knew how to put on a show. They danced, they played, they had a great time with each other, and the audience was engaged.

I went home after the show, wishing it hadn’t ended. I wanted more. I could have listened to them all night long. I decided to check out their music on Amazon, and while it was still great, it just didn’t provide the same experience, though I will continue to listen. This group puts on a fabulous show, and I would recommend them to anyone who likes that jazzy big band sound.

The MSP Escape Lounge Experience

Many people don’t like to fly, or they find the airport to be quite boring. Not everyone is as satisfied with people watching, as I am. If you are flying out of the MSP airport, and you need something to occupy your time, check out the, Escape Lounge.

The Escape Lounge, is a VIP area where you can sit and relax. Anyone can buy a pass into this area. If you happen to be a lover of Groupon, you may even find a voucher for the Escape Lounge.

Inside the lounge you will find plenty of space and outlets, for plugging in laptops as well as phones. Once you pay for entry into the lounge, you will have unlimited food and beverages to choose from. Alcohol is also unlimited, providing you are choosing items from a specific shelf. Some beverages are an extra fee.

Food in the lounge consists of sandwiches, cheese trays, cookies, brownies, soups, tacos, taffy, and a coffee machine that can make everything from black coffee to a mocha or espresso. I cannot vouch for the earlier hours of the day, but I have heard that they have eggs and pastries, which I will check out in March, when I next visit.

The atmosphere of the Escape Lounge was clean and quiet. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I very much enjoyed my visit, and I will be going back and bringing family with.

If you are flying out of a different airport, checkout the Escape Lounge site to see if your airport has one: http://www.escapelounges.com/

Cinzzetti’s For A Tasty Italian Buffet

If you happen to be in the Denver, CO, area on vacation, there will be no shortness of great restaurants to choose from. You will find everything from McDonald’s, to Denny’s, and plenty of great specialty restaurants. If you are looking for an Italian restaurant that the whole family will enjoy, and you like buffets, look no further than Cinzzetti’s, which is located in Northglenn, just outside of Denver.

Cinzzettis is a great place to try all of sorts of wonderful Italian inspired food. There are several salads to choose from, a large number of pizzas, and pastas, as well as desserts. They even have a crepe station. If you are looking for a relaxed experience where you can eat great food and even enjoy some wine, this is a perfect choice.

My favorite items at this buffet are the pizzas, the bow-tie pasta, and the chocolate soufflé. The soufflé is tasty, and it is hard to eat just one, or two. My husband very much liked the ice cream station; with sixteen different flavors, how can you go wrong?

I definitely recommend this buffet, but only if you like a more relaxed environment. If you are looking for quiet and intimate, then you may want to steer clear of the buffet, because most often there are families with children running around.

A Tribute To The Christmas Season

Christmas Eve is knocking at our doorstep and soon, the Christmas season will, once again, have come and gone.  I’m not usually the type to feel sadness during this time of year. I love the holidays and I can barely contain my excitement for Christmas, because of the all the wonderful things that happen. Here is a little view of my feelings about Christmas.

It’s not about the presents, though I love giving them, and I love it even more when I am able to include genuine sentimentality in the gifts I give. Gift giving has gotten a bad wrap (I’m laughing a little right now). It doesn’t matter what the gift you give costs, or if it met a certain price criteria. All that matters is that it was something you wanted to do for someone else, and that it made the other person feel good. One of the best gifts I have ever received was a knit hat that my husband’s aunt made me. I love that hat and I wear it all of the time. She gave it to me, because she knew I would love it. It was that simple.

It’s not about being perfect and throwing the best party. It’s about family, friends, love, joy, and having fun. If you aren’t having fun at this time of year, you are doing it wrong, or the people in your life are doing it wrong. Either way, someone’s doing it wrong. Now, there is an exception to the above “doing it wrong,” clause. When something happens to a loved one, that seems so unfair, the holidays can become a little bit trickier to enjoy.

On November 23rd, my uncle had a stroke. He has been in the hospital ever since. I have cried so many tears this season and I have done a lot of thinking and reflecting. Before I go on to explain my conclusions regarding this Christmas season, I would like to state that I am still seeing the miracles of the season. My uncle was paralyzed on the right side and yesterday I saw him walk down the hallway of the hospital, using a cane. My heart is brimming with love, admiration, and thanks for this miraculous event.

Christmas is about being with the ones you love. It’s about seeing the people you care about and sharing special holiday moments together. It’s about making memories. If you aren’t with the ones you love, you can’t make those memories. My heart goes out to anyone who misses a moment with the people they cherish most, whether it is because of loss, distance, or some stupid fight. If it’s the latter, ask yourself if the anger and hurt is worth it. Maybe you are the one that has to lead by example. Christmas is a great time to forgive and move forward.

This Christmas, remember the simple joys. Seeing family whom you have not seen in a while. Drinking hot cocoa by the fireside. Going for a drive to look at Christmas lights. Attempting to carol through the neighborhood, even though you sound awful and have never caroled before. Sharing a kiss with the one you love, under the mistletoe. Taking a silly Christmas photo that will be remembered for years to come.

Merry Christmas! May the joy and magic of the season fill your cup full.

Visiting Buffalo Bill’s Grave

If you plan a trip to Colorado and you are looking for things to do, you will not fall short on places of interest. The culture and history in Colorado is quite vast and covers everything from distilleries, to mines, to museums about the old west. Some of these places can be found just outside of Denver, in Golden, Colorado.

One particular attraction, that I recommend, is Buffalo Bill’s Grave Site. This can be a fun little stop if you are looking for a travel break. You will find great views, a café, a store full of all sorts of fun trinkets, a museum, a buffalo herd, and of course, the famous resting place of Buffalo Bill.

This particular stop can provide a lot of history for family’s if you are looking for something educational for children. I particularly liked the walk up to the Grave Site, it was quite neat to see where Buffalo Bill Cody, had been lain to rest. It was also fun to just wander around and look at everything. In all honesty, I could have spent hours here just wandering around, so much to look at.

Waterfalls A Plenty In Rocky Mountain National Park

As previously stated, I have a strong love for waterfalls. Rocky Mountain National Park is a great place for exploring many different aspects of nature. If you are looking for waterfalls, there is one great hike that includes three spectacular falls along the way, and even an outhouse or two in case you need one.

This hike is rated as moderate and provides views of three different falls and several other cascades. You will reach the first, Copley Falls, after .27 miles, then as you continue on you will reach, Calypso Falls, in another 1.8 miles. If you choose to hike the remainder of the way, it is another .7 miles to Ouzel Falls. The whole trip there and back is 5.4miles, a lot of stepping upward on the way there.

I did not make it to the third fall, because the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse and I had no way to protect my camera. What I was able to see though, was quite impressive and totally worth it. Had it not been snowing, I would have definitely continued on to the end. Even if you only hike the first two points, you will enjoy the views greatly. I intend to go back and do this hike to completion, next August. I definitely want to see what I missed out on, especially if it’s even more impressive than the first two.

Regular Rooms At The Isle Of Capri

While visiting Colorado in October my husband, Neal, and I, ventured away from Winter Park for an evening to visit Black Hawk. Black Hawk is like a mini Las Vegas. The town is completely made up of casinos.

I have written about the Isle of Capri before, but in my previous post we were staying in one of their suites; this time around we stayed in a regular room with a King size bed.  This stay was not nearly as pleasant as the previous experience.

As far as I can tell the temperature is only controllable by opening a window to the outdoors, unlike some hotels where you cannot open a window, you can in these particular rooms. The thermostat did nothing to cool things down. Despite having the window open all night, and despite it being cold outside, we felt like we were being roasted. I wanted to go back to Winter Park just to get away from the uncomfortable temperature of that room.

Our prior stay at the Isle of Capri was in the middle of July, and we were completely comfortable. The temperature was great and we both slept well. I have no idea what the actual difference was between these rooms. Perhaps the upgraded rooms have some sort of special cooling system. Next time we visit, I will be sure to look into this situation further.

Beyond the temperature issues, we greatly enjoyed our visit. The food at the buffet was tasty as always. They had updated their dining room since our previous visit; it is now more secluded from the rest of the casino, which I greatly appreciated.

A Stay At Silverado II in Winter Park

Throughout my travels, I have stayed at some pretty nice places. I really can’t complain too much, because usually I have a room with a view, comfy bedding, plush common areas for lounging, and a whirlpool tub or hot tub. Now with that said, I also have been known to go on camping trips and I do stay in tents and commune more closely with nature. These two experiences are completely different and have different expectations.

When I travel to places such as Colorado, I want to enjoy the outdoors, but then have a place to relax and recuperate after a long hike or day of exploration. This last trip was to Winter Park and my family stayed at a condo called Silverado II.

Now upon first sight, it is a lovely place to be. The views are nice and the exterior looks well kept, but there are pluses and minuses to this particular accommodation. I am going to tell you about the negatives first, and then try to end this review with a more positive look at this option.

The room we received was on the third floor of building five. Every single day, we walked up and down the stairs to get to the condo, and for someone from outside of Colorado, this made the altitude a little more agonizing. The odd thing about this was that we seemed to be one of only two families in the building, so I don’t know why we were on the third floor.

The inside of our condo had a beautiful kitchen with stainless steel appliances. It definitely looked to be updated, but the rest of the place, not so much. The bathrooms were outright nasty, in my opinion. There were orange spots all over the ceiling and the tubs were discolored. There is no way that I would have opted to take a bath in one of those, I barely wanted to use the shower due to how icky it looked.

The bedrooms looked nice, the linens were fine, but the pillows, in all of the rooms, left something to be desired. The majority of our group commented that they were very uncomfortable and had caused neck pain. Also, the temperature was very hard to control. Despite having the heat off, the bedrooms were very hot unless you opened the door to the balcony to cool things down, but then it was snowing so things became a little too cold.

The only time I saw anyone at the front desk in this place was in the morning. No one ever seemed to be present at night. I honestly have no idea what we would have done if we had encountered any form of emergency with the room. Perhaps there was some book explaining this, but I personally like to know someone is on the property and readily available for any problems encountered.

It should be noted that we did stay during the fall mud season. This being said, the building didn’t appear to have heat outside of our room, or it was not turned on. It was very cold walking from the room down to the hot tubs, which were located on the first floor near the front desk.

Despite the dinginess of certain parts of the condo, and the lack of people working, I did appreciate the layout of the rooms. The full kitchen and updated appliances were very nice. We had multiple balconies which were fun for shooting photographs. I enjoyed the hot tub every night that we were there. I liked the aesthetically pleasing look of the exterior of the condo, and the view of the mountains. I enjoyed the fact that we were close to town and could easily get to grocery stores and restaurants.

Silverado II is an okay accommodation, but I won’t be going back. I like things to look clean and well maintained. I feel that this place needs further updating. If further updates were to be made, maybe I would go back. If you are interested in further information on Silverado II, please visit: https://www.silverado2.com/
