A Fun Filled Night At The Downtown Container Park

Las Vegas is full of great activities. If you are looking for something fun to do off the Strip, Fremont Street has a lot to offer. One place in particular that I recommend visiting is the Downtown Container Park.

This park is quite unique; it offers a variety of food places to choose from. My family ate at Big Ern’s BBQ and we were not disappointed. The food does take a little while to make if you are there on a busy Saturday night, but everything was very tasty. They make a great brisket salad; it is huge and very flavorful. The rest of my family ordered pork sandwiches and they were very happy. If you are not a barbecue fan, there are plenty of other great food options available.

After dinner we sat and listened to some jazz music, which was playing at one end of the park. The singer was wonderful and she sang a lot of songs that we all recognized and enjoyed. There is music in the park every last Saturday of the month. If you are looking for a different form of entertainment, check out one of the 360 degree movies playing in the dome. Movie times can be found on the park’s website.

After we had our fill of music we wandered into some of the stores. There is everything from shoes to jewelry, toys, jerky, and nuts. One particular store I like is Kappa Toys. If you love fantasy games, they have some of those. They also have a ton of collectible figurines. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you can find puzzles, games, and other Harry Potter items. I could have looked through this shop for hours. So far this is the most inexpensive price I have found, including online, on Harry Potter Clue; the prices can range though, on other items.

Toward the end of our visit we were pleasantly surprised when suddenly the Praying Mantis at the front of the park began to move to the music and shoot flames out of its antennae. This was a really neat sight to see. Later in the evening the Praying Mantis began moving again and you could feel the heat from the flames all the way across the street.

The Downtown Container Park is fun, but after 9pm, you must be twenty-one and older to enter. Another rule the park has, is that no pets are allowed, accept llamas and service animals. I find that a little bit funny. Perhaps next time I will bring my llama.

The Bronze Cafe In The Market

I’m currently on a bit of a food kick. Another great place to visit if you want something healthier and a little bit different is the Bronze Café. This café is located inside the Market at 611 Fremont Street.

You can find lots of great food options such as salads, sandwiches and breakfast items. They have gluten free options as well as Vegan. I had a very good sandwich on gluten free bread. The bread was massive and very tasty.

This little spot doesn’t have tons of seating but it is totally worth it for a fresh and healthy experience. We were kind of tired of greasy food and buffets, so my family was very pleased with the Bronze Café. The market the café is located in also has lots of great fresh food options as well as wonderful beverages such as coconut water, to choose from.

Good Food And Troublesome Diners

This past month while in Las Vegas, my family decided to check out Guy Fieri’s, in the Linq. We do love burgers, but only two of us tried them. My parents split a burger plate and they seemed to greatly enjoy it. My husband and I ordered Nachos, which were amazing, and my aunt and uncle ordered Asian Chicken Wraps, which were also very good.

Overall our food and beverage experience was great, but something very odd happened during our dining experience. While we were at our table a round of blue shots were delivered. The waiter told us that they were from the couple sitting at a table nearby. We thought it kind of odd, but what the heck, its Vegas right?

At the end of our meal the waiter came to our table and seemed a bit confused. The couple, who had ordered our shots, had also ordered the people next to them a pile of nachos. He thought we all had known each other, when in reality we were all strangers. This mystery couple, after ordering these random treats for us, decided to dine and dash.

I don’t care who you are, that is so beyond wrong. That poor waiter gets stuck paying those bills out of his paycheck. He probably didn’t make any money that night. I don’t know how frequently that happens but the wait staff at these restaurants deserves so much better than that. Tip your staff and be nice, they put up with a ton of crap from drunks in Las Vegas and they deserve every penny they work for.

Check out Guy Fieri’s in the Linq. The food is great and the staff is wonderful. For more information: https://www.caesars.com/linq/hotel/dining/guy-fieri#.WSbhY9y1thF

Let’s Eat Meat!

I haven’t taken a whole lot of time to write about restaurants as of yet, but I would like to state for the record that while I do appreciate some of the simpler things when it comes to food, I also can be quite the food snob. There are so many things to try and clearly not nearly enough time to do so. I definitely like some fine dining experiences. One place I make a habit of visiting, hugely because my husband turned me on to it, is Pampas Brazilian Grille.

Pampas is one of the best steakhouses in Las Vegas. You can choose to order off the menu or do the all you can eat meat and salad bar. Neal and I have frequently bought Groupons; they are totally worth it. With the Groupon you get two hours of alcoholic beverages, all you can eat seafood which includes: mussels, shrimp, and fish. You also get the salad bar and unlimited meat. The food is wonderful and I recommend for anyone who goes to Pampas to plan to relax and take your time.

Some of my favorite things at Pampas are as follows: shrimp, cheddar rolls, grilled pineapple, sirloin, tri-tip, and pork sausage. I am not a huge chicken fan, but they do have some great chicken options as well. Their salad bar is dangerous. You must choose wisely and not go overboard or you won’t have room for all of the wonderful meats; the selection is vast and includes things such as potatoes, soup, cheeses, olives, lots of different salads, rolls, etc.

The service at Pampas is exceptional. The wait staff has always taken wonderful care of us. They are willing to go out of their way to help you get what you want.  I also have a strong love for the ambiance of the restaurant. It is wonderful for lunch or a nice evening out. The lights are always at the perfect level to encourage intimate conversation with that special someone, or in our case, to make new friends with the table next to us.

I give Pampas a ten, which is saying quite a lot. I can be picky at times, but this is one restaurant that I will continue to visit each time I go to Las Vegas.

Metro Breakdown

Often when on vacation, my husband and I will decide to do an evening in to relax and order pizza. While in Las Vegas we spent a little time researching the nearby pizza places so as to choose the one that would give us the most satisfaction. We decided to go with Metro Pizza, at Ellis Island Casino.

Now normally I don’t like to complain in my writing, but this was a poor experience. We were told that our pizza would arrive in 45 minutes, it was more like an hour and Ellis Island was literally three or four blocks from where we were staying. We were still nice to the delivery guy and tipped him on top of the delivery charge we had already paid.

I was pretty excited about this pizza because it received better ratings than any of the other pizza places in the area. We ordered Buffalo wings and a large supreme pie. The wings arrived without any dipping sauce, so I would not eat them because I do not like wings without sauce. The pizza was cold, I mean, not warm, cold. The flavor was okay, but I’m sure it would have been better if the food had actually been hot.

I am highly disappointed in this experience because I don’t really see an excuse for cold food. If you have given your delivery person too many things to deliver and they arrive with cold food because of it that is an error on management’s part. I may order from here again in the future, but I haven’t yet decided if it’s worth another try. I would be curious as to whether or not others have experienced this type of service from the Metro Pizza at Ellis Island.

Currently Metro Pizza’s website is conveniently unavailable, but here is Ellis Island’s: http://www.ellisislandcasino.com/

A Trip To The Emerald Island

Sticking to the theme of casinos in Henderson, Nevada, there is one more place my family loves to visit; the Emerald Island Casino. This casino is located in downtown Henderson right next to the Eldorado and the Rainbow. You can easily visit all three of these wonderful establishments in one day.

Much like the Rainbow and the Eldorado, the Emerald Island Casino also has a great restaurant. They run daily specials and the food is excellent. You can get breakfast any time. If you are playing at a slot machine and you find yourself wanting a bite to eat, you can order from their bar menu and they will bring the food directly to you.

This casino is very gracious in their giveaways. There are different times during the week where you can earn one hundred times points, or other point multipliers. They hand out free food on a daily basis. Sometimes they have donuts, other times it might be pizza or ice cream sundaes. If you visit on St. Patrick’s Day, they have a ton of great food all day long. This is the place to be for St. Patty’s Day, if you intend to go to a casino.

One of the nice things about the Emerald Island is that you can easily rack up points and use them in the restaurant. The atmosphere is clean and inviting and I can play here for hours without losing too much money. Their daily promotions and treats make this a fun casino to visit on a regular basis.

The Rainbow Club & Casino In Henderson, Nevada

If you have the desire for great food and a smaller gaming facility, check out the Rainbow Club & Casino in downtown Henderson, Nevada. The Rainbow is one of our family’s favorite places to hang out. They have some fun promotions as well as a great restaurant to dine in.

Images, is the restaurant located inside the Rainbow. They serve up a little bit of everything. One of their huge draws is their $1.99 breakfast which gives you a great variety of protein and carbs; on weekends, the price does go up to $2.39, but either way, you can’t beat it. The Rainbow also offers great specials on steak and prime rib. Everything I have eaten at Images has tasted wonderful. They have a very delicious clam chowder on Friday nights that I would definitely recommend.

If you go to the Rainbow on the weekend, you will need to plan ahead for your meal. There is usually a wait for up to an hour prior to being seated. Even with the wait, the dining experience is well worth it. My family usually plans to go play for a while as we wait for our table and things work out just fine.

If you are playing a slot machine, you are eligible for free drinks. The atmosphere is a little smoky, but it is smaller and more intimate than the big Strip casinos. I am very fond of several of the games this casino offers; it has a nice mix of old and new games.

A Look At Stillwater, Minnesota

Minnesota is a beautiful state, full of wonderful things to do during any season. One of my favorite towns to visit, especially during the summer, is Stillwater. This city is located right on the St. Croix River and really is a great place to visit any time of year. I prefer summer months because of the river and being able to sit out on patios while enjoying a glass of wine or a meal.

Stillwater has a ton of options for staying. There are many Bed & Breakfasts to choose from as well as hotels. One particular place I love to stay at is the Water Street Inn. I have stayed at this Inn on three different occasions and every single experience I have had was memorable and fun. The Water Street Inn features fireplaces and whirlpools in each room. You also have a community patio that faces out toward the river. You won’t be staying on the water at any of the other Inn’s in town. They also have their own restaurant and bar and they are located right in the middle of downtown. Location, location, location; it doesn’t get much better than that.

If you prefer something more secluded for your stay in Stillwater and you don’t mind driving, you could definitely choose any of the other B&B locations around town. I have previously stayed at the Outing Lodge at Pine Point. Not all rooms have a whirlpool, but this Inn has great food and a bar in the basement that showcases live music at times. It is set back in the woods and has a very nice romantic feel to it. This makes a great place for staying in the winter; you can easily go snowshoeing or skiing on the trails nearby. The owners make your stay very homey, at one point they brought around fresh made chocolate chip cookies, talk about winning some points there.

For those who are into good food and wine, downtown has a lot to offer. Northern Vineyards is a great place to go and take part in some wine tasting, they also have a balcony in the back where you can sit and drink wine while looking out at the river. If you are looking for great food and a view of the river, The Freight House is a wonderful experience, though on the pricier side. To enjoy some tasty Italian, Buona Sera features some great food, which I very much enjoyed; reservations are recommended. For a more low-key outing away from the high end food, there is also any number of pubs on Main Street to choose from, some of which have music on weekends.

During daylight hours you can easily wander Main Street and find plenty to do. There are quite a few antique shops, bookstores, and art stores to keep you busy. Stillwater frequently is the place to be for outdoor craft fairs as well. If you would like to spend some time on the water you can take a trip over to the St. Croix Boat & Packet Co., and sign up for one of their scenic river boat cruises. Whatever you do, be sure to end your day watching the sunset. You won’t regret this beautiful view over the St. Croix River.

A Night At Treasure Island

Sometimes in the craziness of life, you just need to take a night and get away from home. Lately things have been busy. My husband and I are in the process of selling our house, so we have been working like mad to get things in order. Since we haven’t had a ton of time to connect lately, we decided to do an overnight trip to Treasure Island Resort & Casino, located in Welch, Minnesota.

TI was nice enough to offer us a free night stay, but we chose to upgrade our room to a whirlpool suite. We arrived at 3pm for check-in and the line was minimal. We received our room keys and went up to inspect our room. Upon walking into the room we were happy to see that we had a living room which a couch and television, kitchen table, and mini kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave. Each fridge has free water and regular, as well as diet, Pepsi. You are left coffee, popcorn, and some small packages of Oreos. I found this gesture to be very kind since it seems so seldom that hotels offer free food and beverage amenities anymore.

The bedroom was separated from the sitting area by a set of white French doors. Inside was a king size bed, another television, and our whirlpool. There was also a vanity with sink and mirror outside of the bathroom as well as inside. The shower curtain in our bathroom was kind of yellow and old looking, but otherwise the room was clean. There was also a second bathroom with stool and sink in the entryway to the suite.

After stowing our items in the room, we decided to go check out the buffet. We have eaten at TI’s buffet on several occasions. While my husband loves this buffet, I only like certain things about it. The coffee is great; I cannot get enough of it. They have a great selection of desserts. The food, however, can be hit or miss. Last time I visited, the ribs tasted great but were cold. This time they were hot but tasteless. Neal always gets the Pad Thai, which has been pretty consistent.  They have great potatoes, pizza, and pot roast. If I could change one thing, it would be that the food would be consistently hot. I don’t like cold food; I see no excuse for it.

After dinner we did hit up the casino for a little fun. If you are non-smokers, they now have a great non-smoking section, which has its own bar. This section was newly added in February and they are currently using the bar located in this area to test different beverages and wines on customers to see what people like. They usually have a signature drink and so far, of the two we have tried, they have both been tasty.

The bed and pillows in our room were quite comfortable, once I got everything adjusted. The only problem I ran into was that apparently our mattress cover had ripped and was completely bunched up under the sheets when I got into bed; I found this to be slightly irritating, but minor. I slept well and awoke feeling quite rested after my time in the whirlpool and a good night’s sleep. We were not disturbed at all by the neighbors, which was also a win in my book.

Overall I give Treasure Island a 7. The buffet is decent but not always consistent, and we have run into issues with our rooms missing light bulbs and having broken items a couple of times. This resort does have great amenities though. We have never checked out the water-park or bowling alley, but we plan to on a future visit. We always have fun at TI and we will definitely visit again.

Eating In Uptown At Stella’s Fish Cafe

If you are looking for a fine dining experience in the Twin Cities, you should check out Stella’s Fish Café. Stella’s is definitely on the pricier end, but the food has been nothing but exceptional from the start. My husband, Neal, and I, have eaten at Stella’s on three different occasions and we have walked away thoroughly satisfied, each and every time.

You can choose to eat at Stella’s for dinner or lunch. We ate there at dinner twice and lunch once. The service during lunch started out good, but then for whatever reason, ended poorly. We couldn’t seem to get refills on beverages, and it took a while to get the check. The other two times we visited, things ran quite smoothly with service.

We have not tried their oyster bar, but the Lobster Bake we have ordered more than once, has always been plenty of food for two. This particular meal left us wanting for nothing. It comes with a bottle of wine and a dessert. We had to take ours to go this last visit; we were just too full from the rest of the meal.

During our visit we had the Berry & Bri Salad, which was very tasty. We also had the Lobster Bisque and then of course the main dish of the Lobster Bake. Included in the bake is a tomato based stew with potatoes, shrimp, oysters, sausage, two full lobsters, and corn. It is served with a large chunk of bread on the side. After the main course we were given the choice of a couple of different desserts. We have tried the Flour-less Chocolate Cake, the Vanilla Crème Brulee, and the Warm Brownie Batter. We loved them all, but the two chocolate items would be number one on our reorder list.

Stella’s makes for a great romantic dinner. They run specials during Valentine’s, and sometimes you can find a Groupon to try them out. The meals are a bit pricey. I honestly wouldn’t feel the need to go here unless they were running a special or I had a Groupon. I like great food, and I like fancy meals, but I feel that you can find similar items, of the same quality, for less money at other places if you look around. Stella’s gets a 6 on my scale because of the price only. If money is no object to you, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a wonderful food experience, any time.
